Dry laundry quickly indoors using your tumble dryer with method that 'works best' | Express.co.uk
Tumble dryers often get a bad rap for being energy-guzzlers, but when used correctly, they don’t cost as much as you think.
One key factor is choosing a dryer with a high energy efficiency rating, such as a heat pump dryer, which uses significantly less energy than traditional vented or condenser models.
Based on the UK Energy Price Cap of 24.5p per kWh, heat pump dryers cost just 46p to run a cotton cycle with a full load. Comparatively, the average condenser tumble dryer costs £1.18 and vented dryers £1.23 for the same cycle.
For those who aren’t in the market for a new appliance, they can make a simple change to reduce the cost of doing laundry.
Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Michael Forbes, Lead Product Trainer at AEG, suggested that Britons pay attention to the position of their tumble dryers.

The ambient temperature in your laundry area significantly influences energy efficiency.
“Tumble dryers work best with room temperature air. In colder environments, the machines will use more energy to heat the air, resulting in longer drying times and higher energy consumption”, said Michael.
He continued: “To maximise efficiency, tumble dryers should be kept indoors at a room temperature closer to 35C.

“Lower temperatures, especially below 5C, can cause your machine not to operate as intended while still increasing energy costs due to the increase in energy usage needed to heat the colder air.”
The perfect room temperature for a tumble dryer is 19 to 24C, which experts at Electrolux recommend for “the best drying results.”
They warned that the drying time will be longer if the ambient temperature is too low. For example, a tumble dryer kept in a room between 10C and 15C will have an increased drying time of 30 percent compared to a room between 19C and 24C.
A room temperature below 5C and 10C will see the drying time increased by a staggering 50 percent.
AEG instructs customers to make room in the kitchen, naming it one of the “most sensible places to install your tumble dryer”.
It's one of the best rooms in your home for temperature regulation and ventilation, and it should also have appropriate flooring for the machine to stand on, for example, a flat stone or tile floor.
